The National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (Mohylianka), founded in 1654, is one of the oldest academic and theological schools in Eastern Europe. During the 17th-18th centuries, the university served as a powerful symbol of academic excellence and national pride. Today the leadership seeks to make the modern Academy the intellectual symbol of Ukraine in the drive to create a national “knowledge society.”Mohylianka is introducing standards modeled on the successful universities of Europe and the United States, and adjusting them to meet the needs of Ukraine, to create a uniquely Ukrainian model of higher education. The recent focus is aimed at introducing the standards of the European Higher Education Area (from the Bologna Process) to Ukraine. International exchange is a very important aspect, with professors lecturing at foreign universities and international students and faculty staying at Mohylianka. The university is governed by the Supervising Board appointed by the Government of Ukraine.
