Institute of neurosurgery named after A.P. Romodanov of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine was founded on the base and as an inheritor of Kyiv psychoneurology Institute, which was established in 1927. Over years the Institute considerably enlarged and developed, changed its research directions and expanded the range of scientific problems. The Institute carries out research on important practical and theoretical scientific problems, such as diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of tumor of cerebral nervous system, development and clinical application of new intravascular surgery, neuro transplantation; neuroimmunology has developed and considerable achievements has been developed in this area, a system of neurosurgical care has been set up to manage childbirth brain damage. The Institute is a leader in these areas among neurosurgery institutions in developed countries.
Currently the Institute has 1197 people on its staff, including 57 scientists (three of who is an academician, one corresponding member, 13 professors, 24 doctors and 86 PhDs). The Institute clinical base includes 15 core departments having 361 beds, where more than 8 thousand patients are treated annually. Surgeries are performed in 15 operating rooms, where nearly 6,000 patients are operated on for central and peripheral nervous system diseases. The policlinic department provides specialized consultations to 30,000 patients every year.
